About Devold

High-quality outdoor clothing made from natural raw materials - this has been the approach of the Devold brand since it was founded in 1853, when the industrialist Ole Andreas Devold applied the knowledge of textile production he had acquired in Germany to his home in Alesund, Norway. In view of the unforgiving weather conditions on the fjords, the local farmers and fish had a great need for hard-wearing, warm clothing. A demand that Devold met with knitted wool underwear and the classic Icelander sweaters/jumpers. After a bumpy start, he achieved a breakthrough with the help of a local wholesaler. The quality of the garments spoke for itself, and after just a few years the ambitious entrepreneur grew to become Norway's largest textile producer.

In addition to the use of biodegradable raw materials, the social aspect has always been an important cornerstone of the brand's success. Towards the end of the 19th century, the company expanded and relocated production to Langevag, a municipality around 40 km south of Alesund. The factory made a significant contribution to the economic development of the region. Company founder Devold had community facilities - such as hospitals, kindergartens and churches - built, giving the inhabitants an incentive to remain loyal to their hometown. He also built accommodation for his workers. Last but not least, Devold had a strong sense of progressiveness: a telephone line connected the factory with the administration in Ålesund, while 125 water-powered light bulbs lit up the halls. Two technologies that were not commonplace at the time.

By the first half of the 19th century, Devold had finally established itself as the clothing brand of choice for pioneers. The company's sweaters, socks and mittens accompanied Fridtjof Nansen on his expeditions to the Arctic Ocean. At the other end of the world, it was Roald Amundsen who explored the South Pole in knitted wool clothing. Roots to which the brand has remained true to this day. Using first-class merino wool from New Zealand, Australia and South America, Devold creates snug functional clothing for women, men and kids - 100% biodegradable and sustainable. This makes Devold textiles the perfect choice for passionate outdoor athletes and adventurers and those who want to become one.
