About Feuerhand

The story of the Feuerhand lantern began in the Saxon Ore Mountains in Beierfeld. Hermann Nier ran a plumber's workshop there in the 1870s and made lanterns, among other things. With industrialization, the manufactories were replaced by factories. In 1893, the brothers Hermann and Ernst Nier founded the production facility for storm lanterns. The business was taken over by Frankonia and after disagreements at management level, Hermann Nier set up his own storm lantern factory "Hermann Nier Feuerhandwerk" in 1902. He applied for the Reich patent for lantern production using folding and punching technology, dip tinning and without manual soldering. In 1933, production of the well-known small storm lanterns - the Baby series - with fireproof borosilicate glass began.

Between 1918 and 1938, Nier Feuerhand became the world's largest manufacturer of hurricane lanterns. The products were constantly improved and new patents were registered. With the beginning of the Second World War, the world market collapsed. Out of necessity, Feuerhand, like many others, finally took up military production. After the war, the Nier family was expropriated, the machines were dismantled and taken to the Soviet Union. The family fled west to Lüdenscheid in Westphalia. However, the brand name "Feuerhand" continued to belong to the Nier family. They built up a small series production, which was relocated to Hohenlockstedt in Schleswig-Holstein in 1949. Since 1989, the only model produced has been the Feuerhand Baby Special 276 cold air lantern. Feuerhand has been part of the Petromax Group since fall 2014.
