About Silva

Silva is the Latin word for forest, and that's where it all began, around 1930 - with the invention of SILVA's first, world-famous, liquid-filled orienteering compass. The Swedish company was founded in 1933 by Gunnar Tillander (May 13, 1904-2000) and the brothers Alvar and Björn (1911-1984) Kjellström. The head office is located north of Stockholm/Sweden and controls the export market of the European Union and the USA. Outdoor and wellness are the main business areas with the product categories of compasses, pedometers, headlamps, outdoor instruments, binoculars and orienteering equipment. As the inventor of the liquid-bearing compass, Silva is still one of the most important players in the market for these traditional navigation instruments. From simple field compasses such as the Silva Field 7 to high-quality bearing compasses, there is the right device for every requirement. In the years that followed, Silva was continuously expanded and remained a constant driver of innovation in the field of navigation. In 1992, for example, the world's first handy GPS device with an integrated digital compass was launched on the market. Today, Silva comprises the parent company Silva Sweden AB and the subsidiaries Silva Ltd in the UK, Silva Germany, Silva France and Silva Far East in Hong Kong. Now called Johnson Outdoors Inc., the company acquired the U.S. company in 1973 and the Canadian company in 1985 and owns the rights to manufacture and distribute Silva compasses in North America. Today, the company is represented in 110 countries worldwide and is synonymous with high-quality compasses.
