Protected from the wet when travelling with a waterproof jacket

If you don't want to be put off your outdoor plans by wind and weather, you definitely need a good waterproof jacket that reliably protects you and your luggage from the wet and rain. And it's not just the classic waterproof jacket that is now available on the market. Instead, you can choose from numerous different shapes and designs so that you can choose exactly the waterproof jacket model that suits the season and your activities.

Rain jacket: waterproof, dirt-repellent and comfortable

Of course, a waterproof jacket has to be absolutely waterproof so that it reliably protects you in any amount of rain. But there are also other criteria that make a good outdoor waterproof jacket. You can recognise waterproof jackets that can withstand outdoor activity without any problems by the following features:

• A waterproof jacket is very light and fits in any luggage. After use, it can be rolled up small or folded so that it can be stowed away in your backpack to save space.
• The material (e.g. GORE-TEX®) is water-repellent or waterproof, windproof and can reliably withstand even strong rain. Ideally, it should also be permanently water-repellent (DWR) impregnated.
• A waterproof jacket is still breathable and moisture-regulating so that heat cannot build up inside and your clothes do not stick to your damp skin.
• Moisture transport to the outside is made possible by a special membrane incorporated into the fabric and special coatings.
• Depending on the area of use, you can choose from two or three-layer waterproof jacket models. The individual layers are arranged so that each one fulfils its own special functions. To make the jacket lighter, the layers are sometimes joined together - however, this reduction does not detract from the functionality and, above all, the moisture protection.
• Some models have a helmet-compatible hood so that you can also wear them on a bike, when climbing or when ski touring. The hood can be tightened individually to prevent rain from getting in.
• Practical zip pockets offer storage space for important outdoor items.
• Further details such as underarm zips, cuffs with velcro, mesh inside pocket or drawstring in the hem further increase comfort.
• Some models are adapted to the anatomical shapes of men and women.

Gore-Tex, coating and co.

The GORE-TEX® jacket is already waterproof in itself. If it also has a waterproof coating, this is a sure sign that the outside of the jacket in particular is also water-repellent. However, it is important that the coating is also breathable, otherwise the whole jacket system will start to falter. However, this is usually the case with a waterproof jacket: the fabric and coating are both waterproof and breathable.

Rain jackets with a particularly functional finish are permanently water-repellent impregnated (DWR). This means that water beads up directly on the coating and the jacket material cannot soak up water, because only a dry jacket can be breathable in the long term.

This classic all-round waterproof jacket is ideal for short hikes and mountain tours. It has an average robust construction, but is not suitable for permanent loads such as backpacks or climbing harnesses. A robust alpine jacket is therefore recommended for high alpine activities. It has an extra robust design in exposed areas, such as the shoulders, to protect against abrasion from backpack shoulder straps.
