About Wechsel

The roots of Wechsel Tents go back to the 1980s. In 1987, Jörg Schulze started his North Cape-Cape Town expedition and drove around 37,000 kilometers across Africa from Berlin in seven months - always with him: a camping tent. Tents played a central role both on his travels and in his work in a Berlin specialist store, with Schulze having the opportunity to test tents from different manufacturers on his tours. With every single tent, he notices details that he doesn't like or that could be improved and asks himself whether it is not possible to design a tent so that they meet his requirements, have good cuts and have details that work - in other words, they are well-engineered and available at a reasonable price. In the end, he decided to try his hand at making the first prototypes from cotton using a household sewing machine. The decisive impetus for self-employment came a short time later: a friend who had good connections in Asia, Vietnam to be precise, asked Schulze if they would like to set up a company together. Shortly afterwards, a collection of initially seven models with exclusive accessories was created. Over the next year and a half, the two founders carried out various s to get closer and closer to their idea of the perfect tents. Finally, in 1996, the first self-made catalog was produced and the first tents were delivered. Only a short time later, Globetrotter Ausrüster added the tents to its range, which was a great success for the young brand. In addition to inquiries from the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark, the expertise was also in demand from the military: Wechsel developed and produced a tent for an Indian special forces unit.
