Indoor bouldering is great for children. Many kids want to get straight on the climbing wall. However, there are a few things to consider beforehand and important rules to follow. Transa’s Joy offers tips to help children climb more safely.

Small children discover the world by climbing, and slightly older children usually still like to climb and are often naturals at it, making bouldering a great activity for children. The following tips will help to ensure that the little ones have fun bouldering and stay safe on the wall.

Bouldering vs. climbing – benefits for children

There are no ropes or harnesses when bouldering. This helps children to move freely and is also easier for them to manage – there is no need to handle a rope or safety device. In addition, the floor of the fall area is padded when bouldering. This reduces the risk of injury.

The right equipment for child-friendly bouldering

Climbing shoes are mandatory depending on the rules of the centre. You can also rent them and if you want to simply try bouldering out a few times. Bouldering is usually also permitted with clean indoor shoes or non-slip socks. Climbing shoes for children differ from those for adults. While adult climbing shoes should be a very tight fit, children’s feet need more space.

Comfortable clothing should be worn, for example tracksuit bottoms, leggings or jogging bottoms and a t-shirt. It is important that clothes do not restrict freedom of movement.

In addition to the required equipment: pack snacks and drinks! Bouldering is strenuous and requires energy. Many centres also offer food and drink and have a dining area for breaks
