Bouldering with children: things to bear in mind

Many climbing halls have a children’s area where the grips are bolted closer together and are therefore easy for children to reach. In this area, children can start bouldering at an early age. In practice it has been shown that 7 years is a good age to start bouldering on normal routes. However, this is only a guideline and depends on the child’s development. It is important that the children can assess the risk of a fall and can maintain concentration well. In addition, motor control should be well developed. Enquire in advance at the bouldering centre – many have their own rules and age restrictions.

Friendship bracelets, necklaces, bracelets or anklets, rings, large earrings – if possible remove all jewellery before climbing so that it doesn’t get caught or scratched on the rough wall.

Children will probably want to get climbing right away. However, you should try to establish the routine of first warming up the body, stretching, and thus getting used to the movements. For example, jump a few times, circle your arms, mobilise all joints for at least 20 seconds using circular movements and stretch your fingers, arms and legs.

Whether children or adults, experienced climbers or newcomers – anyone can fall off the wall at any time when bouldering. Therefore, the area in which someone might fall or jump off must always be kept clear. Do not leave any climbing shoes or chalk bags lying around. Furthermore, do not walk, run, or jump around underneath people who are bouldering.

It is important that children enjoy positive experiences early on, so don’t push them too hard, just let them climb. Following the correct route with the right colours can sometimes be of secondary importance. Also remember that the wall looks higher to a child than it does to an adult. Therefore, it may be enough for them to simply climb to the head-height of an adult, or, if there is room, to simply climb horizontally along the wall. And another important thing to note: do not lift children up onto the wall. When they climb up from the ground, they gain self-confidence with each and every movement and get used to the height.

An adult should always supervise children in the bouldering area, pointing out the rules to them if necessary and reminding them to take breaks.

This prevents fatigue and reduces the risk of falling. Watch others during the breaks: How do they boulder? How do they make it to the top? How do they grip and how do they move their feet? Eating a small snack also gives you energy for your next route.

This is the term used to refer to the practice of looking out for one another when bouldering. A person on the ground directs the fall of their spotting partner. This requires strength and, most importantly, the right technique. The risk of children injuring themselves is high. It is for this reason that children shouldn’t spot one another. An adult should always be close by.

As is the case for adults, it is also worthwhile for children to attend a course. This helps them to gain a better understanding and get technical tips. For example, a course will also teach you how to fall properly: the best way to avoid injury is to roll away and avoid using your hands to support yourself.
