Functional cycling jerseys get you on tour

There are plenty of cycling jerseys out there. They are not only functionally equipped and specially tailored to the needs of cyclists. Nowadays, they are also just as stylish as many normal t-shirts.

What's so special about cycling jerseys

Functionality is at the forefront of cycling jerseys, after all, cycling is all about sport. No athlete wants to be travelling in a sweaty t-shirt that sticks to their sweaty body. That's why, unlike conventional t-shirts, cycling jerseys are not made from cotton but from functional materials:

Bike jerseys made from polyamide or polyester are very robust, breathable, fast-drying and generally easy to care for. The natural fibre merino wool is also becoming increasingly popular in the world of sportswear. It is also being used for bike jerseys. Merino wool is particularly popular because it is temperature-regulating and anti-odour in a natural way.

Furthermore, the most important features of a bike jersey include:

  • A particular feature of a good bike jersey is its cut. It is cut slightly longer at the back.
  • It is equipped with a zip at the front, which can either be continuous or end halfway down the length. This allows you to let some fresh air in at the front if necessary.
  • The waistband of a bike jersey is elasticated and the hem is equipped with anti-slip silicone tape on the inside so that the jersey does not flapping around or slipping on the bike.
  • In addition, some bike jerseys are also equipped with raglan sleeves. On the one hand, they offer you more freedom of movement, and on the other, they are ideal if you like to ride a lot with a bike backpack, as there are no seams under the shoulder straps to get in the way.
  • A bike jersey should ideally have three back pockets, at least one of which should have a zip so that you can store your energy bar, drinking bottle and smartphone safely and within easy reach.
  • A bike jersey has good moisture transport. This means that the water vapour produced on your skin through sweating is quickly transported to the outside of the jersey, where it evaporates as quickly as possible.
  • Bike jerseys also have good thermoregulation. Based on the principle of the thermos flask, a layer of air between the jersey and your skin ensures that you don't freeze when it's cold outside. In warm temperatures, on the other hand, this layer of air provides cooling.

Road cyclist or mountain biker - which jersey do I need?

As a general rule: bike jerseys should be functionally featured and cut in such a way that they fit close to the body, but at the same time give you the freedom of movement you need in the saddle. And yet there are small differences depending on the area of use.

The be-all and end-all of a road bike jersey, for example, is a close fit, as this is where low air resistance is particularly important. Mountain bikers, on the other hand, love a casual fit. That's why jerseys for downhill or enduro biking are cut slightly wider than road bike jerseys. Many of these mountain bike jerseys are also equipped with a goggle cleaning cloth integrated into the waistband so that you can quickly clean your goggles from dirt splashes after a muddy ride. Everyday bikers or all those who prefer to take it easy on their trekking or e-bike have a free choice.
