Tent pegs: for optimum hold on any underground

Are you already planning your next outdoor overnight stay in a camping tent? It is important that you always have enough sturdy pegs and guy ropes with you to be able to attach the tent to different types of ground. Straight when it's very windy, it's better to plan more pegs than too few so that your tent doesn't fly around your ears overnight.

There are different pegs that are suitable for hard ground or for sand and snow. Depending on whether you are staying on a campsite or in the great outdoors - at Transa you can choose the right tent pegs for firmly and securely anchoring your tents, awning or tarp. Although tent pegs are usually already included in the scope of delivery, you should also take different types of pegs with you for overnight stays on changing undergrounds.

Tent pegs: practical, reliable and robust

The better you fix the pegs in the ground, the longer your tent will withstand wind and weather.

You can recognise good tent pegs by the following features:

  • The material (e.g. duraluminium, steel, carbon fibre, titanium, polyamide) varies in robustness depending on the model. Very impact-resistant pegs such as steel pegs are suitable for extremely hard ground, while plastic pegs can be fixed very well in snow or sand.
  • When inserted into the underground, the pegs remain stable and do not bend.
  • Pre-assembled loops on the peg allow you to remove it again very easily if you want to set off quickly and dismantle your accommodation.
  • On some models, these loops are fitted with reflective elements to prevent you from tripping over the pegs at night.
  • A practical feature is a pannier that holds all the pegs securely.

What are the differences?

There are a variety of different pegs that are suitable for different purposes.

Standard pegs

This is the hook-shaped peg that is usually supplied with every camping tent. It is suitable for soft to loamy ground. However, hard objects such as stones etc. should not be in the ground.

Tent pegs for loose ground

If the ground is very sandy or even covered in a thick layer of snow, special sand or snow pegs are used - usually made of plastic. Thanks to their large contact surface, they ensure that the peg holds well even in loose snow or sand.

Pin pegs for hard ground

These types of tent pegs are mainly used for marquees, but they are also sometimes used for trekking or camping. They are always used when the ground is really rock-hard and the pegs have to be hammered into the ground like a nail. Ground pegs look like real nails, but this special shape prevents the peg from bending when tapped in.

Last resort:

Special tent pegs These special tent pegs, also known as anchors or tent bags, are used in particularly demanding terrain, such as in rocky areas. They are used in places where no other peg will hold.

Pressing, screwing, hammering or tapping

You can either simply press or screw pegs into the ground by hand, hammer them in or sink them into small crevices. If you are travelling on long tours and expect different undergrounds, you should also take different pegs with you in your camping accessories. Additional fuses for your tent include sandbags, heavy stones and guy ropes that are attached to trees.
