Climate change is advancing – extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, sea levels are rising, glaciers are melting. The world for which our outdoor products are designed is changing.
As a retailer, we bear responsibility because most of Transa’s products are energy-intensive to manufacture. The reasons for this include:
Extraction of fossil raw materials: as a source material for all plastics and as an energy source (including electricity, heat) in production
Dyeing and finishing (e.g. waterproofing, UV protection, flame protection, crease protection) of fabrics for clothing, sleeping bags, tents and backpacks
Metal production for various outdoor equipment
Environmental pollution caused by sheep in wool production
As a company, we need to consider how we can reduce the carbon footprint of our product range.
Since 2023, we have been calculating the scale of our direct and indirect emissions as a company. We conduct our carbon footprint analysis in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol methodology, which serves as an international benchmark for measuring the greenhouse gas emissions of companies and other organisations. In accordance with this methodology, we divide our emissions into three categories: Scopes 1, 2 and 3.
At Transa, the majority of emissions are generated during the manufacture of products (Scope 3).
We are a committed member of the STS initiative, which aims to bring the Swiss textile and clothing sector in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As part of this initiative, we must set ourselves climate targets that comply with the SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative). This means that we want to reduce our greenhouse gases in line with the Paris climate targets. Additionally, it ensures that we not only meet the mandatory requirements of Swiss law (Klima und Innovationsgesetz, KIG – Climate and Innovation Act), but also underpin our climate commitment with a science-based level of ambition.
Like all our other sustainability efforts, our approach to climate change is constantly evolving; we and our partners are always learning. We want to take our customers with us on our journey to reducing emissions by 42% by 2030 and beyond by regularly updating them about our ambitions, our progress and the hurdles we encounter.
