Winter camping in a Swiss ski resort – or in the middle of nature? Here, Transa's Tinu presents some of the campsites that are also open in winter. He also gives you tips on what to look out for when choosing a campsite.
Summer, sun, camping – but also winter, snow, camping. After all, winter doesn’t have to put an end to camping or camper van tours. Overnight stays in the wintry countryside require a little more preparation, but it pays off in a warm and cosy time outside.
One of the most important requirements for winter camping is a campsite that is open all year round. Many close at the end of autumn and only open again in spring. Be sure to check in advance so you don’t encounter a locked door.
Below, we present some of the campsites in Switzerland that are open all year round.
Want winter camping without the cold weather? Then the Brigerbad campsite in Valais is the place for you. Located in the heart of the Valais mountains, this campsite is also right next to a thermal spa – where you can warm up even during a cold winter. If you’re not travelling with a tent or camper van, you can rent a wooden caravan on the campsite.
In Central SwitzerlandThe Eienwäldli campsite in Engelberg is a good choice for winter sports fans: the cross-country trails run next to the campsite and can be accessed directly, while skiers and snowboarders can take a free bus to the valley station in the ski area. There’s also a ski cellar with boot heating. A wellness area, spa and restaurants await nearby for your downtime.
Are you planning a camping adventure but don’t want to have to buy new equipment for it? With us, you can easily hire equipment such as a tent, sleeping bag and sleeping mat from all of our stores. You can also hire child carriers or bikepacking bags from us. We also rent out via ferrata sets and mountain sports equipment, such as pickaxes and harnesses. Reserve your temporary equipment.
The Morteratsch campsite near Pontresina in the Engadin offers fantastic views of the Bernina massif. The campsite is located by a lake in the middle of nature, surrounded by trees. You can eat in the restaurant or cook your meals in the common room’s kitchenette. There are camper van and tent pitches as well as various cabins and a fully equipped caravan for rent. The Celerina and Diavolezza-Lagalb ski areas are each about 15 minutes away, and the cross-country trails are also nearby.
In the Bernese OberlandThe Bergblick campsite in Adelboden is located in the middle of the mountains at a height of 1,200 metres, and is close to various winter sports areas. You can dry your equipment in a heated ski storage room, perhaps while you warm up at the fire pit by the creek. For winter camping without a camper van, wooden cabins are available to rent.
In TicinoThe TCS Olivone campsite is located in Valle di Blenio. Winters are milder in the ‘Valley of the Sun’, making it the perfect place for a camping holiday for anyone who feels the cold. Camping in tents is not possible in winter, but there are pitches and bungalows available for glamping. Food is available from the Poli Bistro, and there is also a climbing wall on site, open all year round and free of charge for guests.
Tips for winter campingCheck opening periods: many campsites are closed during the winter. If you are travelling with a tent, make sure the campsite is not only open for vehicles, but also for tent camping.
Choose a campsite that offers amenities such as a heated lounge and hot showers. Winter-proof infrastructure helps, especially if you’re camping outdoors in winter for the first time.
Depending on the location of the campsite, it may get very cold at night. Find out in advance what the temperature is likely to be at night and equip yourself with a sleeping mat, sleeping bag and warm clothing. Pack an emergency bivouac bag as well.
Take winterproof gas with you when cooking with gas – it also works at sub-zero temperatures.
