Whether in a wine barrel or at a castle: here is the next instalment in our series, with four more tips for extraordinary overnight stays close to nature.
Val Müstair: After a scenic ride over the Ofen Pass, you reach the Biosfera Val Müstair. Together with the neighbouring Swiss National Park and parts of the municipality of Scuol, the area forms the first high-alpine UNESCO biosphere reserve in Switzerland. A diverse region to find peace and quiet, but also an ideal starting point for long walks in the wild and unspoiled National Park. Surrounded by impressive peaks, Val Müstair features typical Engadine houses nestled among beautiful meadows, ancient larch trees and Swiss stone pines. The region also has a lot to offer culturally, such as the Benedictine Convent of St. John and one of the oldest hotels in Switzerland. In the historic Hotel Chasa Chalavaina, you can stay in lovingly furnished rooms that have been welcoming guests for over 770 years.
Schaffhauserland: Ever spent the night in a barrel? The Weinfasshotel Rüedi in Trasadingen offers accommodation in ancient oak barrels or newer wooden barrel rooms. Nestled in the Schaffhausen region of Klettgau or ‘Chläggi’, as the locals call it, picturesque vineyards invite you to take long walks and enjoy atmospheric sunsets. The Randen ridge offers a variety of hiking and cycling trails, and on a clear day, various lookout towers reward you with views stretching far into the Swiss Alps. From Klettgau it’s only 15 to 20 minutes by public transport to the Rhine Falls, the largest waterfall in Europe. From here, the ViaRhenania long-distance hiking trail leads upstream and downstream.

Emmental region: Anyone staying at the extraordinary youth hostel in Burgdorf Castle will feel like they’ve been transported back in time. The individual rooms have been carefully integrated into the castle, to preserve its original character. Admission to the varied and interesting castle museum is included with every overnight stay. Various interactive activities offer fun and games even for the little ones. From the castle, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the region. From here, beautiful footpaths lead along the Emme and there are a variety of cycling routes through the idyllic Emmental valley. The unique hilly landscape offers countless options for actively enjoying nature.

Lake Constance region: Near Lake Constance in the canton of Thurgau, an extensive network of cycling and hiking routes stretches along the promenade and inland across rolling hills and through the orchards of the Thurgau region. The lake is a wonderful way to cool off, especially in summer. If you’d rather escape the heat at higher altitudes, there are plenty of opportunities in neighbouring regions, such as on the Säntis or in the nearby Alpstein. Why not spend the night in Arbon, for example? The third-largest city in the canton of Thurgau enchants visitors with its well-preserved medieval old town. Within walking distance of the lake is the Max Burkhardt Haus – a real sight to be seen. The house is furnished in Art Nouveau style and is a complete work of art by decorative painter and photographer Max Burkhardt, who lived and worked here with his family until he passed away. Today, the house is part of the Ferien im Baudenkmal (holidays in a listed building) foundation.
