Buying a bivy sack: what you need to know

A bivy sack protects you against wind and rain and, depending on the model, insects. With a sleeping bag and sleeping mat, it keeps you warm and dry at night. In this blog post, you’ll find the most important information about buying a bivy sack.

What are the different types of bivy sacks?

What are the different types of bivy sacks?

There are different bivy sacks, also called bivy bags, which are suitable for different conditions and cover different requirements.

Emergency bivy sack: These are very light and compact, but not very robust. In emergency situations, they can save lives, but are only suitable for one-off bivouacking.

Ultra-light bivy sack: Not very robust, but very light. Protects you against wind and rain.

An all-rounder bivy sack: Make sure that the bivy sack is waterproof and breathable. Even if you don’t plan to stay out in the pouring rain, dew often forms overnight. A waterproof bivy sack keeps this moisture out. The breathability ensures that moisture from the body can be released to the outside and does not accumulate in the bivy sack, meaning won’t get wet from the outside or the inside.

Material

Bivy sacks are made of different materials. Some are more robust, particularly breathable or waterproof. Choose the right model for your adventure.

Ultra-light: Similar to a survival blanket, these models have a special coating. They are not particularly robust and generally speaking, can only be used once. They are suitable for emergency situations and protect against hypothermia and hyperthermia.

Nylon or polyester fabrics: Bivy sacks made of these materials are robust and durable. They are available with various coatings. A DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating on the outside and a polyurethane (PU) coating on the inside is recommended. This makes the fabric waterproof.

Membranes: In more expensive models, membranes make the fabric waterproof. The advantage this has over a coating is that they allow moisture from the inside to escape, making them more breathable. PU membranes have a slightly lower breathability than, for example, an electrospun membrane, but are significantly cheaper.

Proper care of your bivy sack

Caring for a bivy sack properly

Here are the most important tips for making sure that your bivy sack lasts for as long as possible:

  • Selecting your camping spot: Find a dry and flat place for your bivy sack. Make sure that there are no sharp objects such as thorns, stones or glass splinters damage the fabric.

  • Ventilation: Let the bivy sack dry during the day so that any moisture can escape. This reduces the risk of mould forming.

  • Cleaning: After an adventure, remove any visible dirt with a damp cloth and also use it to give the inside a wipe down. Let it dry well before storing the bivy sack.

  • Storage: Store the bivy sack in a cool, dry place with no direct sunlight. Wardrobes or cellars are great places to store your bivy sack.
