Instead of lugging weighty foodstuffs around, just add water – there are plenty of lightweight, packaged meals available to buy. However, if you’d prefer to make your own dried lunch, we’ve got the perfect recipes for you.

Long tours are sure to leave you ravenous – but you need your backpack to be as small and light as possible. That’s why it’s worth taking astronaut-style food with you on multi-day trips. We don’t just mean cereal bars and dried fruit, though. You can get real meals that are totally dried, too, such as Asian noodle soups and hearty stews. These ultra-light meals are available to buy ready-made, but some are relatively easy to make yourself. Lots of foodstuffs can be dried, from fruit and vegetables to meat and fish: there are no limits on the dried meals you can make!

Overview of various drying methods

There are various ways to dry foodstuffs. While it’s relatively easy to dry fruits and vegetables, caution is advised when drying animal products: they can quickly spoil if you don’t dry them properly. As a result, plant-based meals are the place to start if you’re new to dehydrating food. Alternatively, you can buy the animal products ready-made, for example in the form of powdered milk or dried meat, and combine them with plant-based ingredients that you dried yourself.

Recipes: make your own dried provisions

When you’re making your own dehydrated provisions, you don’t need to dry all the ingredients yourself. You can already buy lots of foodstuffs in dried form and put together meals using them. We’ve created three recipes where you only need to dry a few ingredients (if any) yourself.
