Ski touring: must-have equipment for your backpack

Touring skis, skins and an avalanche transceiver obviously belong on any packing list for ski touring. Then there’s the right clothing – the best way to go here is by layering. Mountain guide Fabian from Höhenfieber was on the Hagelstock in the Lidernen resort. In the video, he explains what else he carries in his backpack. And, most importantly, how he organises his equipment in his backpack.

A helmet is obviously essential for a safe descent. And when you’re out for longer, also pack ski wax and maybe accessories for your ski skins. Skin spray or waterproofing spray will keep your skins grippy on the ascent.

Ski touring is a wonderful experience with the right knowledge, the correct training and the necessary level of caution. You definitely need to learn this stuff before you go ski touring on your own for the first time, whether it’s with a ski touring course run, for example, by Höhenfieber mountaineering school, or on a tour accompanied by a professional. We also recommend that you continually brush up on and improve your knowledge.

More equipment for your ski touring

A backpack should of course be kept light for ski touring. But you may be glad to have the following equipment with you:

• Cable ties and a multitool: useful for doing minor repairs.

• Survival blanket: this keeps you warm if you have an accident or the weather turns suddenly.

• Sun cream and lip balm: snow reflects the sun’s rays. Make sure to protect yourself, even if the sun is only gently shining.

• Finding your way: your smartphone battery drains quickly in cold temperatures, so carry it close to your body. And be prepared if you have to manage without your smartphone. Maybe you have a GPS watchor the right maps.

• Headlamp: You are probably planning to depart or arrive at the hut before dusk. But if something comes up or you are slower than expected, you will probably be glad of some light.

If you are planning to go ski touring and stay in a self-catering hut or winter cabin, make sure you find out in advance whether you need to arrange a key or register. Also important to know: does the accommodation have drinking water? Are there cooking facilities, or do you need to pack a cooker? Is it enough to take a hut sleeping bag, or do you need a thick winter sleeping bag? Once you have everything sorted out and packed, it’s time to put on your touring skis.
